Depression & Other Mental Illness

Mental illness includes a wide variety of illnesses that affect an individual’s ability to think, complete tasks, get along with other people, maintain a schedule and handle stresses. Some people are unable to leave their homes, control their thoughts, remember instructions or finish things they start. Whether your diagnosis is depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or other illness, the Social Security Administration looks at your ability to function and be productive in a work setting and the effects of your medication. Frequently, persons with mental illness are able to be productive for short periods of time but not on a consistent basis.   The Social Security Administration is supposed to consider how you function over a sustained period of time.

If drug addiction or alcoholism is the reason you are unable to work, you cannot qualify for disability benefits. The Social Security Administration is supposed to determine if you would be able to work if you stopped the substance abuse and, if so, then you will not qualify for benefits. The best evidence of how you would function without drugs or alcohol is a sustained period of sobriety.
