Shortness of Breath & Other Breathing Problems

Breathing problems are associated with a number of different ailments including COPD, heart disease, obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, asthma, lung cancer and infections. The Social Security Administration  will consider the extent to which your breathing problems limit your ability to stand and walk, lift, climb, pay attention and carry on a conversation. The Social Security Administration also looks to see to what extent your episodes of shortness of breath interfere with work activity, either because you have to stop to take medication or because you cannot get to work or finish your shift because you are too ill.

If you have a pulmonary disorder that results in frequent exacerbations, then each episode of exacerbation needs to be documented either in a calendar of your own or in your doctors’ records.
